Classroom Update

Science: We are just about to finish our current science unit on properties of matter. First students learned about the different properties of matter such as mass and density. We experimented with all sorts of objects finding their mass, volume, and then seeing if they sink or float. Students found that object that have a greater density then water sink!

Once students understood the properties of matter they were ready to learn about mixtures and solutions. We made some mixtures out of salt, water, gravel, and power. Students used their knowledge of the properties of matter to separate this mixture. Students also used their knowledge of the changes in states of matter to separate a salt and water solution using the power of the sun! We then tried to saturate 50 mL of water with salt and worked with a juice mix to investigate concentration. Finally, (as seen below) students made three mixtures and watched for chemical reactions....we made 2!

Reader's Workshop: We have been practicing open response type questions and getting familiar with the online tools for next week's PARCC assessment.

Math: Last week we began our unit on line plots. Students are learning how to conduct surveys and display the information using a line plot. Students are also working to interpret already completed line plots.
